Contemporary Extension

…and for the next post.
Today I was pleased to receive confirmation of planning approval for an extension to an early Nineteenth Century semi-detached house. The brief was to provide 2 extra bedrooms, a larger kitchen, dining space, integral garage, utility room and sun lounge that exploited the dramatic views of the Cumbrian mountains as well as creating a strong visual and physical link to the garden.

The approach was to provide a traditional solution to the side, using the same style as the main house, but to adopt a contemporary approach to the rear single storey element, that houses the kitchen and sun room. The client and I would have liked more glass but the planners insisted on less. However, the compromise doesn’t diminish the intention of providing a building that expresses the modern lifestyle, whilst not being too challenging.
