Planners can approve modern design

I have chosen for my first post a scheme that gained planning permission a couple of years ago. It has not yet been built.

The scheme is for 2 separate houses and an associated garage block and is designed around a U-shaped courtyard. The scheme addresses the client's desire for a contemporary home and the demands of the planning authority for a vernacular use of materials and the massing to reflect local farm buildings.

I was more than pleased with the overall outcome of the scheme and somewhat shocked that such a controversial proposal gained planning permission with no compromise on design - something that is very rare in this area of the world. My message to others that are practising in the area - good design can prevail.
